Vacancy Announcement: Syria Analyst based in Gaziantep



Description of the Programme:

Our organization, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a federally-owned non-profit international cooperation enterprise and is responsible for the administration of technical cooperation within the framework of Development Cooperation between the Governments of Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Turkey. The Office of GIZ was established in 1997 in Ankara in order to serve this purpose of cooperation between the two Countries.

GIZ is currently looking to employ a qualified and reputable Syria Analyst on a full-time contract to support the office in Gaziantep. Under the overall supervision of the Risk Management Adviser, the Syrian analyst will be responsible for monitoring dynamics inside Syria and their potential implications upon GIZ’s programming.

A.Responsibilities and Tasks

The Syria Analyst;

  • Monitor political, social, economic and other relevant dynamics inside Syria.
  • Contribute to mapping, social media analysis and summary reports regarding GIZ’s cross-border programs in Syria.
  • Report on significant dynamics and daily developments/ events by checking open sources and other networks.
  • Contribute to conflict sensitive programme monitoring
  • Remain up to date on events in Syria with a broader general emphasis on the MENA region and utilise Arabic source material to produce daily updates and analytical reports when required.
  • Write clear and concise analytical reports concerning development in Syria with possible effects on GIZ programming and concerning Syrian refugee movements in Turkey.
  • Closely cooperate and coordinate with UWTS advisors and create a link between programme and risk management.
  • Support the Risk Management Office for GIZ Turkey with other tasks when required.

B.Required qualifications, competences and experience

  • At least two years of experience of research activities and report writing on events in Syria
  • Extensive political and social knowledge of and networks within GIZ’s operational area in Syria and MENA region.
  • Excellent command of spoken and written Arabic and English; Turkish is of advantage.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a team player.
  • Good organizational skills, strong written communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement and make decisions independently.
  • Ability to work with little supervision.
  • Ability to travel within Turkey and when possible to Syria on a short notice.
  • Computer skills in MS –Word, Outlook, spreadsheet packages and ability to create maps.
  • Creativity and the ability to work with limited resources.
  • Past professional experience in the humanitarian and/or stabilization sector is an added advantage.
  • Abide and follow GIZ Code of Conduct.

 C.Other knowledge, additional competences

  • Deep knowledge/ extensive networks among civil entities inside Syria.
  • Take responsibilities with the ability to work under minimal supervision.

  • Strong analytical skills.
