Project Description

The programme aims to enable people in opposition-controlled Syria to experience increasingly effective accountable and transparent security and justice services, which are delivered on a progressively formalized basis by civilian-led institutions; in increasingly resilient partnership with the communities.

In order to do this, the programme will work with both communities and formal/informal security and justice (S&J) service providers to develop their capacity to design and deliver services that respond to the needs of the population.  The program seeks to promote local ownership and leadership of the decision-making processes which guide the delivery of resources, including those supplied by the programme.

Purpose of the Position

The Research Analyst is to provide support to the Monitoring and Evaluation and Research (MER) Unit of the programme through social and traditional media monitoring and analysis, and to more broadly support research efforts within the MER Unit through data analysis, technical support, and oversight of field research activities.

Primary Responsibilities:

– Oversee the collection of relevant social and traditional media and the development of the media source database.

  • Oversee and assure the quality and validity of information collected by triangulating it with various sources.
  • Develop and maintain a media source database, to include reliable social and traditional media sources.
    • Work with the MER Unit to develop the parameters and methodology used to develop and maintain the database.

– Analysis and Reporting


  • Compile daily media briefs (DMBs) on developments in Syria.
    • Detail developments in areas of Syria where the programme operates.
    • Detail developments elsewhere that could impact the programme efforts.
    • Provide analysis on the implications, challenges, and risks to programme efforts posed by developments.
  • Compile provincial summaries on developments in Syria.
    • Draw from DMBs to provide a weekly summary of developments, and the implications, challenges, and risks to programme efforts posed by developments.




– Provide support to the MER Unit.

  • Compile spot reports and requests for information (RFIs) pursuant to requests from the MER Unit.
  • Support thematic research efforts pursuant to requests from the MER Unit.

– Oversee the collection of atmospherics data from community counterparts, Field Officers for PROJECT

  • Support the implementation of research activities for programme, under the supervision of the Research Manager.
  • Support and coordinate with local partners as needed to ensure that any future program implementation is on schedule, and that partners adhere to program and programme donor regulations and guidelines.
  • Manage the efficient and timely delivery of all deliverables (atmospherics, Requests for Information, Critical Impact Reports, etc.).

– Provide support to the thematic research and programme evaluations


  • Work with programme component teams to collect, analyse, and synthesize data for all program deliverables.
  • Research, write, and edit Requests for Information, Critical Impact Reports, atmospherics reports, and other deliverables.
  • Ensure the deliverables are quality assured before it is submitted to the Research Manager.
  • Assure timely submission of all deliverables.

Qualifications and Experience


  • Bachelor degree (Master’s Degree is desirable) in international relations, international development, history, Middle Eastern studies, political science, or other relevant field.
  • Capacity to produce high quality briefs and reports in both Arabic and English.
  • Experience navigating media in a highly dynamic conflict environment.
  • Experience working on Syria related issues.



  • Strong proficiency in MS Office and Google Applications.
  • Strong personal organization, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Bilingual in English and Arabic (written).
  • Experience in a non-governmental organization or in the United Nations.
